Solid Oxide Electrolyser (SOEC) Stack Test Station (30 kW) – SE30K-SO
Solid Oxide Electrolyser (SOEC) Stack Test Station (30 kW) – SE30K-SO
Overview
The SE30K-SO is a high-temperature solid oxide electrolyser cell (SOEC) stack test station engineered to operate and characterise electrolysis stacks up to 30 kW. It combines programmable DC power delivery, closed-loop gas management, and automated safety logic to support repeatable electrochemistry experiments and engineering validation in hydrogen R&D environments across ScienceGears Australia and New Zealand.
Principle of operation
SOEC stacks split steam electrochemically through an oxygen-ion conducting ceramic electrolyte at elevated temperature. The test station supplies controlled electrical power to the stack while metering and conditioning process gases, maintaining stable inlet conditions through heated lines, and managing exhaust cooling and separation to protect sensors and improve measurement fidelity.
Key specifications & features
- Test capacity: up to 30 kW (stack testing)
- Gas flow measurement/control: wide-range mass flow measurement (turndown 100:1); for the SE30K class, typical flow coverage supports H₂-side ~0.3–150 slpm and O₂/air-side ~0.2–75 slpm (configuration dependent)
- High-temperature gas conditioning: direct gas line heating up to 600 °C to reduce condensation risk and stabilise feed conditions
- Compression / loading control: servo-driven pressure control (up to 1000 kgf), with optional load cell-based monitoring
- Back-pressure control: automated regulation up to 3.5 bar with high stability control
- Safety & monitoring: integrated shutdown logic and gas-handling protections; supports crossover-style gas monitoring workflows and robust exhaust handling
- Diagnostics (optional): AC-impedance / HFR capability plus multi-channel cell voltage monitoring for stack health assessment
- Data & control: automated DAQ and test sequencing with exportable datasets suitable for engineering analysis
Compatibility & typical applications
This platform is designed for SOEC stacks and hot-box/furnace-based test rigs; the SE30K-SO station dimensions are custom to the stack format and balance-of-plant requirements. Typical applications include:
- performance mapping and durability testing under realistic loads
- degradation studies (ASR trends, contact resistance, sealing effects)
- optimisation of operating conditions (steam utilisation, gas composition, pressure)
- evaluation of materials, interconnects, and stack architectures for scale-up
