AEM Water Electrolyser Stack Test Station (5–10 kW) — SE5K-AE / SE10K-AE

Overview

The SE5K-AE and SE10K-AE Stack Test Stations are floor-standing, integrated AEM water electrolyser test platforms designed for controlled stack testing up to 10 kW in hydrogen R&D and engineering labs. Housed in a 1100 (W) × 1800 (D) × 2000 (H) mm cabinet, they combine electrolyte/liquid circulation, gas handling, safety monitoring and automated control software to support repeatable performance and durability evaluation.

Principle of operation (AEMWE)

An anion exchange membrane (AEM) conducts hydroxide ions through the membrane while the station delivers controlled electrical power to the stack. Water is converted into hydrogen (cathode) and oxygen (anode), with the balance-of-plant maintaining stable operating conditions (flow, temperature, pressure) and continuously recording key signals for efficiency and degradation analysis.

Key features and specifications

  • Test range: ~5 kW (SE5K-AE) and ~10 kW (SE10K-AE)
  • Gas flow measurement:
    • Hydrogen flow: ~25 slpm (SE5K) / ~50 slpm (SE10K)

    • Oxygen flow: ~12 slpm (SE5K) / ~25 slpm (SE10K)

    • Mass flow control turndown: 100:1, with automatic N₂ purge

  • Electrolyte/liquid circulation: liquid temperature control (RT to ~95 °C), level control & alarm, and liquid–gas separation with controlled flow delivery
  • Gas conditioning: gas cooling + condensation trap, with optional dryer/filters and dewpoint monitoring pathways
  • Safety & quality monitoring: H₂ in O₂ and O₂ in H₂ concentration sensing (typical ranges 0–5% and 10% vol), plus automated shutdown logic
  • Pressure control: automated back-pressure control up to 10 bar (higher pressure options may be configured)
  • Diagnostics (optional): integrated AC impedance / HFR capability (typ. 10 mHz to 10 kHz) and multi-channel voltage monitoring (±5 V per channel)

Compatibility and applications

These stations are suited to AEM electrolyser stacks using water-based feed and electrolyte management approaches common in AEMWE research. Typical use cases include:

  • Polarisation curves, efficiency mapping and operating window optimisation
  • Durability testing (steady-state holds, cycling, start/stop protocols)
  • Comparative evaluation of membranes, catalysts, porous transport layers and stack hardware
  • BoP development (flow/pressure/thermal strategy validation)

Why choose ScienceGears

ScienceGears supports Australian and New Zealand teams with configuration guidance, commissioning support and application-aligned setup. These test stations also integrate well into broader hydrogen workflows alongside potentiostats/galvanostats for electrochemical diagnostics, gas analysis, and related energy test station infrastructure.
