ATR6600 Series 1064 nm Handheld Raman Analysers
1064 nm handheld Raman identification for fluorescent, coloured and optically challenging samples
Description
The ATR6600 Series is a 1064 nm handheld Raman family designed for samples where fluorescence prevents reliable analysis with conventional 532 or 785 nm handheld instruments. It includes the ATR6600 and the updated ATR6600Pro platform together with application-specific spectral-library packages. Integrated touchscreen operation, camera documentation, wireless communications and rechargeable power provide a stand-alone field workflow while the 1064 nm laser reduces fluorescence in many coloured, biological and organic materials.
Why 1064 nm Raman?
Fluorescence is a major limitation of Raman spectroscopy.
The probability of Raman scattering decreases as excitation wavelength increases, but fluorescence also often falls dramatically.
This means a 1064 nm Raman analyser can obtain a cleaner spectrum from samples such as:
- coloured plastics
- oils
- fuels
- pharmaceutical materials
- biological samples
- pigments
- plant materials
- other strongly fluorescent organic samples
where a 785 nm instrument may show mainly fluorescence background.
Family Structure
ATR6600
- general 1064 nm scientific/identification platform
- application-specific DH, PH, IN and GM packages documented
ATR6600Pro
- newer optical and signal-processing architecture
- DH, PH, IN, FTN and GM application packages documented
The suffixes generally identify library/application workflows rather than a fundamentally different Raman principle.
How It Works
The instrument directs a 1064 nm laser onto the target and collects the Raman-scattered infrared light.
Because a conventional silicon CCD has poor sensitivity at these longer wavelengths, the system uses infrared-sensitive detector technology.
The measured Raman spectrum is processed internally and can be compared with a stored reference library. Results, spectra and sample information can be saved or exported depending on software configuration.

Compatibility and Selection Guidance
Choose 1064 nm because the sample requires it, not simply because it is the longest wavelength.
For non-fluorescent materials, 785 nm can often produce a stronger Raman signal and faster measurement.
ATR6600Pro is most relevant where the newer 1064 nm handheld architecture and faster optical/signal-processing workflow are required.
For high-resolution research spectra rather than identification, a 1064 nm ATR3110 or Raman microscope configuration may be more appropriate.

ScienceGears can assess whether fluorescence is likely to justify 1064 nm excitation and help choose the relevant research, pharmaceutical, industrial or other library configuration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does 1064 nm completely eliminate fluorescence?
No, but it often reduces fluorescence substantially compared with visible or 785 nm excitation.
Why is 1064 nm Raman sometimes slower?
Raman scattering is weaker at longer excitation wavelength, and infrared detectors have different sensitivity/noise characteristics.
Can ATR6600 identify coloured plastics?
1064 nm is particularly useful for many coloured polymer samples, although performance depends on the material and additives.
What is the difference between ATR6600 and ATR6600Pro?
ATR6600Pro is the newer platform with revised optics and signal processing, while both use 1064 nm excitation.
Can users add custom spectra?
Yes, user-built spectral libraries are supported.
Is ATR6600 suitable for Raman microscopy?
No. It is a handheld identification system. Microscopic analysis requires the ATR8xxx microscope family.
