PE-8 is a wet-process polyethylene (PE) battery separator supplied as a continuous roll for laboratory and pilot-scale electrode/cell assembly. In lithium-ion cells, the separator is a microporous electrical insulator that prevents electronic shorting between electrodes while enabling ionic transport through electrolyte-filled pores.
Principle of operation
A PE separator functions by combining:
- Microporous ion pathways that hold electrolyte and support Li⁺ migration
- Electrical insulation to keep cathode and anode physically separated
- Thermal dimensional stability to reduce shrinkage-related failure under elevated temperatures
Key specifications
- Width: 455 mm
- Thickness: 8.0 ± 1.0 µm (uncoated; coating thickness 0 µm)
- Length: 1000 m roll
- Air permeability (Gurley): 120 ± 50 sec/100 mL
- Porosity: 45 ± 5%
- Tensile strength: MD ≥ 1000 kgf/cm²; TD ≥ 1000 kgf/cm²
- Puncture strength: ≥ 300 g
- Heat shrinkage (1 h): 90°C (TD ≤ 1.0%, MD ≤ 2.0%); 130°C (TD ≤ 1.5%, MD ≤ 2.5%)
Compatibility & applications
Ideal for electrolyte systems commonly used in Li-ion research and compatible with typical coating/lamination and slitting workflows. Suitable for:
- Coin/pouch cell prototyping and separator screening
- Rate capability and impedance studies (pair with potentiostats/EIS)
- Safety-oriented experiments where low shrinkage is important
