High-Surface-Area Platinum Gauze Electrode for Electrochemistry
The Platinum Gauze Electrode is a high-surface-area counter electrode designed for demanding electrochemical experiments where stable current flow, chemical durability, and low counter-electrode polarisation are important. In a three-electrode system, the gauze electrode serves as the auxiliary electrode, completing the circuit and carrying the balancing current while the working electrode drives the reaction of interest. Its open woven structure provides substantially greater active area than a simple wire, helping reduce local current density and improving performance in high-current or highly capacitive measurements.
Key Features and Typical Specifications
Common platinum gauze electrode configurations are supplied in cylindrical hollow-gauze formats for routine electrochemical cells, with typical specifications such as:
- high-purity platinum construction, commonly 99.9% to 99.99%
- common 50-mesh cylindrical format around 23 mm outer diameter × 20 mm height
- typical mesh wire diameter of 120 µm and aperture of 390 µm
- connection wire around 600 µm diameter
- optional PEEK plug designs for compatibility with many laboratory electrochemical cells
- sealing options suitable for aqueous or selected organic electrolyte environments
- custom mesh counts, dimensions, and tailored geometries available for specialised research setups
Some specialised bulk-electrolysis assemblies are also available in platinum-iridium alloy gauze formats, such as inner or outer electrode configurations used in coulometry and preparative electrolysis systems.
Compatibility and Research Applications
Platinum gauze electrodes are widely used in:
- cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, chronopotentiometry, and bulk electrolysis
- water electrolysis, hydrogen and oxygen evolution studies
- batteries, supercapacitors, and other energy-storage research
- fuel cells, electrocatalysis, corrosion studies, and electro-organic synthesis
- aqueous and many non-aqueous electrochemical systems, depending on cell and seal material selection
