Coating Evaluation Cell (Paint Test Cell)

Overview

The Coating Evaluation Cell (Paint Test Cell) is a compact electrochemical fixture designed for localised coating and corrosion evaluation on flat metal coupons and coated panels. The cell clamps onto a specimen using a sealing interface to create a stable electrolyte reservoir over a defined exposure zone. This controlled geometry improves repeatability and makes it practical to compare different regions of the same panel—such as intact coating, repaired areas, or locations near an artificial defect—under identical test conditions.

Principle of operation

The sample serves as the working electrode (WE). A sealed electrolyte compartment is formed above the selected test spot, supporting a standard three-electrode electrochemical configuration:

  • Reference electrode (RE): Ag/AgCl (commonly supplied/used)
  • Counter electrode (CE): graphite rod (commonly supplied/used)

With a potentiostat/galvanostat, the cell enables open-circuit potential (OCP) tracking, potentiodynamic polarisation, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) to quantify coating barrier behaviour and degradation pathways over time.

Key features and specifications

  • Electrolyte capacity options: 5 mL, 10 mL, and 50 mL formats to suit rapid screening or longer exposures
  • Defined exposure area options: 1 cm² (small-area testing) or a circular exposure of Ø 42 mm (larger-area evaluation)
  • Specimen thickness compatibility: suitable for panels in the 0–5 mm range
  • Accessory-ready design: ports/support for inserting RE and CE and maintaining consistent electrode positioning

Typical applications

  • Ranking protective coatings (paints, polymers, conversion coatings) using EIS and polarisation
  • Studying defect-driven under-film corrosion and coating breakdown
  • Comparing surface pretreatments and inhibitor performance
  • Routine QC of coated sheet materials for corrosion-critical environments
