Flat Corrosion Cell (Non-Jacketed)

A compact, laboratory-standard flat corrosion cell for repeatable electrochemical corrosion testing on planar coupons and coated panels. The specimen is clamped behind a sealed window so only a defined geometric area is exposed to the electrolyte, enabling reliable current density calculations and consistent comparison between alloys, surface treatments, corrosion inhibitors, and electrolyte conditions. This non-jacketed configuration is ideal for ambient / room-temperature studies where a simpler setup, faster turnaround, and easy cleaning are priorities.

Working principle and measurement setup

The cell is configured for conventional three-electrode electrochemistry used in corrosion science:

  • Working electrode: flat metal coupon or coated panel (clamped specimen holder with sealed exposure window)
  • Reference electrode: Ag/AgCl reference electrode positioned close to the working surface
  • Counter electrode: platinum mesh counter electrode to complete the circuit

A Luggin capillary (salt bridge) helps place the reference potential near the electrode surface, improving potential control and measurement quality by reducing solution resistance effects.
