J-Type Fritted Luggin Capillary for Accurate Reference Electrode Positioning

The J-Type Fritted Luggin Capillary is designed to position the reference electrode sensing point close to the working electrode surface in electrochemical cells. By bringing the ionic connection of the reference electrode closer to the reaction interface, the capillary helps reduce uncompensated solution resistance and minimise IR drop during electrochemical measurements.

Working Principle

In a three-electrode electrochemical setup, the working electrode potential is measured against a stable reference electrode. If the reference electrode is placed too far from the working electrode, the measured potential can include unwanted ohmic voltage drop through the electrolyte. A Luggin capillary acts as a narrow electrolyte bridge, allowing the reference electrode to sense the local solution potential near the working electrode without placing the larger reference electrode body directly in the active current path.

The J-type geometry allows the fritted tip to be positioned conveniently near the working electrode while the reference electrode remains securely inserted in the wider upper section. The fritted end provides ionic contact with the test solution while helping to limit bulk mixing between the reference electrode filling solution and the sample electrolyte.

Key Features

  • J-type glass capillary design for flexible reference electrode positioning
  • Fritted tip for controlled ionic contact with the electrolyte
  • Helps reduce uncompensated resistance and IR drop
  • Suitable for use as a Luggin capillary or salt bridge connection
  • Supports more reliable potential control in three-electrode measurements
  • Compatible with many standard electrochemical cell designs
  • Useful for aqueous and selected non-aqueous electrochemistry, depending on electrolyte compatibility

Compatibility and Applications

This fritted Luggin capillary is suitable for use with common reference electrodes such as Ag/AgCl, Hg/HgO, saturated calomel and selected non-aqueous reference electrodes, depending on dimensions and electrolyte requirements. It can be used with potentiostats, galvanostats, corrosion cells, H-cells, photoelectrochemical cells, battery research cells and customised electrochemical reactors.

Typical applications include corrosion testing, electrocatalysis, battery materials research, hydrogen evolution, oxygen evolution, CO2 reduction, sensor development, photoelectrochemistry and general electrochemical method development.

For best results, the fritted tip should be placed close to the working electrode without touching or shielding the electrode surface. The capillary should remain filled with a suitable electrolyte and free from trapped bubbles to maintain a continuous ionic pathway.
