NCA-88 Lithium Nickel Cobalt Aluminum Oxide Powder
NCA-88 Cathode Active Material (LiNi₀.₈₁₅Co₀.₁₅Al₀.₀₃₅O₂) Powder
Overview
NCA-88 is a nickel-rich lithium nickel cobalt aluminium oxide (NCA) cathode active material designed for high-energy lithium-ion battery research and prototype cell fabrication. In layered oxide cathodes, lithium ions reversibly intercalate/deintercalate within the crystal lattice during charge/discharge, enabling high specific capacity when processed into dense, well-adhered electrodes and paired with appropriate electrolytes.
Key Specifications
- Composition (molar, normalised to Ni+Co+Al): Ni ~81%, Co ~15%, Al ~3.5%, with Li ~1.01 (slightly Li-rich).
- Particle size distribution (µm): D10 ≥ 5.0, D50 = 11.5 ± 2.0, D90 ≤ 30
- Tap density: > 2.5 g/cm³
- Specific surface area: 0.25 ± 0.10 m²/g
- Moisture (H₂O): ≤ 300 ppm
- pH: 11.50 ± 0.50
- Indicative half-cell discharge capacity (2.8–4.3 V): ≥ 188 mAh/g (0.2C), ≥ 175 mAh/g (1C)
Compatibility & Use
NCA-88 is compatible with standard lithium-ion electrode workflows (slurry mixing, coating, calendaring) and common cell formats (coin, pouch, cylindrical research builds). For electrochemical characterisation, it pairs well with battery cyclers and potentiostats (including EIS) to study rate capability, impedance growth, and cycle life under controlled protocols.
Typical Applications
- High-energy cathode studies (Ni-rich layered oxides)
- Formulation optimisation (binder/carbon selection, loading, porosity)
- Ageing, impedance, and thermal-abuse screening (research scale)
- Benchmarking against NMC and LFP cathode chemistries
