Fumasep FBM-PK Bipolar Membrane
Fumasep FBM-PK Bipolar Ion-Exchange Membrane
Overview
Fumasep FBM-PK is a bipolar membrane that combines a cation-exchange layer (CEM) and an anion-exchange layer (AEM) in a single laminate. Unlike standard CEMs, this membrane is designed for water-splitting at the interface: under reverse bias, water dissociates into H⁺ and OH⁻, allowing the generation of acid and base streams without adding chemicals. This makes FBM-PK highly useful in bipolar electrodialysis, pH control, CO₂ capture/conversion cells and novel electro-membrane processes.
Working Principle
When a suitable potential is applied across the bipolar junction, the membrane drives water dissociation. The CEM side passes H⁺ and the AEM side passes OH⁻, so users can create acidic and alkaline compartments from a neutral feed. This reduces chemical consumption and enables compact, membrane-based process intensification.
